Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess who grazed her goats with golden fur on the hills around Tihany. Her beauty was admired everywhere, even in faraway places, but nobody spoke a word with her, because she was mute.
One day the gray King of the Waves emerged from the Lake Balaton and saw the girl. He promised to free her from her silence and asked for a pitcher of goat's milk for his sick son. The young prince immediately strengthened thanks to the goat's milk and the girl began to speak with sounding voice. The young prince fell in love with the girl at first sight, but the heart of the princess was filled with pride.
She spoke to no one and rejected the King’s son heartlessly, and soon he died of a broken heart. The King was filled with anger: he cursed the cruel girl and locked her in a rock. The orphaned flock of golden fur drowned in Lake Balaton and the hoofs of the goats have been washed by the waves to the shore ever since.
And the haughty girl? She has not been seen by anyone since. The curse of the King still works: as she didn’t speak before with anyone, now trapped in the rock she answers everyone who addresses her. She became the echo of Tihany.
